Fresh from her palpable frustration which stemmed from a series of failed attempts to secure a business loan, Florence Naminga, went back to the drawing board determined, hence, joining United Civil Servants SACCO (UCS SACCO) in her search for financial redemption.

Regardless of her gender, which is often looked down upon by the society when it comes to business opportunities, her resilience and determination enabled the birth of her poultry farming business of 250 plus chickens – signifying UCS SACCO’s gender inclusivity in its customer relations.

“My entrepreneurship dream sailed off by virtue of being a member of UCS SACCO. At UCS SACCO a corporate member only need to have an affordability for the institution to give you a loan,” said Naminga, who has been a member of UCS SACCO since 2025.

Naminga says she wishes to transform her poultry farming into an employment hub so that a good number of job-seeking Malawians can benefit from her enterprise.

As at now, Naminga gets a minimum of 100 eggs per day from Mikolongwe Chickens, sells broilers, and she sells chicken manure cultivated from her chicken houses.

He has seen that through cooperative business model, through United Civil Servants SACCO, people will be supported financially. UCS SACCO is a towering example that when people come together, they can contribute to Africa’s broader vision of inclusive social economic development and national building. We are optimistic that cooperative business model can eradicate poverty in Malawi and Africa at large,” said Waliwa. “For instance, we have Gonjetso Kumpatsa, a UCS SACCO member who brought innovative solutions by bringing health facilities to his local community in Mangochi through a SACCO business model. As of today, he is able to give out OPD services, antenatal services and other health-related services to community members,” added Waliwa. Board Chairperson for UCS SACCO, Fletcher Mhango, applauded United Civil Servants SACCO’s status as a market leader on the local front, the institutions room for growth, and its social impact. “We as United Civil Servants SACCO, we are the best in the country; we are the giant of the nation. United Civil Servants SACCO (UCS SACCO) has yet again stamped its obligation on climate action by planting trees worth millions. Speaking during UCS SACCO’S tree planting exercise at Kaphala Primary School in T/A Mazengera in Lilongwe, guest of honour at the event who is the Executive Director for African Cooperative Development Foundation (ACDF); a philanthropic arm of the African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA) and also Head of programs at ACCOSCA Grace Watsiera, said UCSSACCO is bridging the financial gap in Africa and meeting community needs to align with the slogan of ‘Changing lives’.“ACCOSCA being a mother body of all SACCOs in Africa is committed to build a sustainable continent, and planting trees is part and parcel of that sustainability model. As SACCOs, we are mandated to changing lives; one life at a time. We want an African continent that is financially self-reliant. Nevertheless, we need to create a conducive environment that enables development to prevail,” said Watsiera.For his part, UCS SACCO’s Chief Executive Officer Francis Waliwa, described the green initiative as one way of dealing with climate change, and therefore, giving back to the society.“As a financial institution, we are not limited to financial operations as we also have a responsibility to restore nature through the planting of trees. We also have a role of making sure that we are not just planting but rather growing trees. "We will work hand-in-hand with the community and the school authorities in making sure that the planted trees are well taken care of through consistent watering. We are therefore, projecting a 95% growth rate for our trees,” said Waliwa.“I urge every Malawian to exercise a patriotic responsibility of planting trees, not as an involuntary action but with an informed understanding of the role of trees in our day-to-day lives. As UCS SACCO, we are interested in instilling a mindset change on environmental stewardship in the communities we serve,” Waliwa added.Councillor for Sanjiko-Mazengera Ward, Paul Msiska Khongoni, gladly welcomed the initiative, describing UCS SACCO’s Green Initiative as a powerful tool to complement government efforts towards sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

Dr. Grace Kafulatira, a retired civil servant who previously served as a head teacher at Lilongwe Girls Secondary School before assuming incumbency at the ministry of education where she served as the Director of Education and Sports in Lilongwe urban, is a member of United Civil Servants SACCO (UCS SACCO) since 2023. When UCS SACCO introduced the SACCO concept to her, she was amazed by UCS SACCO’s exercise of corporate social responsibility, UCS Mobile, as well as the SACCO’s propensity to accommodate retired civil servants.“I joined UCS SACCO because it is the only SACCO in Malawi that welcomes retirees through its retiree’s portfolio and it allows you to access loans to establish small scale businesses. I for one is of the impression that a retired civil servant cannot be a bad debtor. Of note, USC Mobile is a good digital innovation for retirees.” Said Dr Kafulatira.“Good customer management is a great marketing tool provided you couple it with uniqueness in service delivery and this is where UCS SACCO excels as its services are unique and tailored to satisfy customer needs. For instance, I was able to easily access a loan of millions when I was buying paint during the construction of my B&B. More pleasing was the swift pace with which my loan was processed,” added Dr. Kafulatira. Dr. Kafulatira said her soon to be launched B&B is a source of employment thereby contributing to the realization of the country’s blue print, Malawi 2063.
