Geofrey Matomola, an employee of CIC Insurance, extends his hand towards a piece of paper that rests idle on his office desk, and adjusting his necktie more tightly around his neck, sits down. At this point, the interview takes motion, and Matomola is sharing his experience as a member of UCS SACCO. Geofrey Matomola’ provider-and-client relationship with United Civil Servants SACCO (UCS SACCO) kicked-off in 2025 when sales representatives from UCS SACCO exposed him to the SACCO concept. The way the product that is β€˜Member Education’ was presented to him, robbed his heart. β€œI was not familiar with SACCOS and how they operate. If anything, I was exposed to small-scale financial enterprises like β€˜Zipereganyu’, which are relatively limited in some other aspects. Then one day, whilst at work, sales representatives from UCS SACCO made their way to our office and a platform was created for them to market their brand. β€œIn the aftermath of becoming a member of UCS SACCO, I was helped to a Relief Loan which meant a lot to me considering that I was coming from a background that denied me access to loans. More remarkable was the ease and pace with which I received my loan. And, the loan gave me peace of mind because I was able to carter for bills which were invading my mental welfare,” said Matomola. Matomola says he is not only impressed by how the SACCO has exposed him to accessible loans, but also how his approach towards savings has taken a valuable direction through the financial discipline that UCS SACCO imparted on him.

We also have a role of making sure that we are not just planting but rather growing trees. "We will work hand-in-hand with the community and the school authorities in making sure that the planted trees are well taken care of through consistent watering. We are therefore, projecting a 95% growth rate for our trees,” said Waliwa.β€œI urge every Malawian to exercise a patriotic responsibility of planting trees, not as an involuntary action but with an informed understanding of the role of trees in our day-to-day lives. As UCS SACCO, we are interested in instilling a mindset change on environmental stewardship in the communities we serve,” Waliwa added.Councillor for Sanjiko-Mazengera Ward, Paul Msiska Khongoni, gladly welcomed the initiative, describing UCS SACCO’s Green Initiative as a powerful tool to complement government efforts towards sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

Dr. Grace Kafulatira, a retired civil servant who previously served as a head teacher at Lilongwe Girls Secondary School before assuming incumbency at the ministry of education where she served as the Director of Education and Sports in Lilongwe urban, is a member of United Civil Servants SACCO (UCS SACCO) since 2023. When UCS SACCO introduced the SACCO concept to her, she was amazed by UCS SACCO’s exercise of corporate social responsibility, UCS Mobile, as well as the SACCO’s propensity to accommodate retired civil servants.β€œI joined UCS SACCO because it is the only SACCO in Malawi that welcomes retirees through its retiree’s portfolio and it allows you to access loans to establish small scale businesses. I for one is of the impression that a retired civil servant cannot be a bad debtor. Of note, USC Mobile is a good digital innovation for retirees.” Said Dr Kafulatira.β€œGood customer management is a great marketing tool provided you couple it with uniqueness in service delivery and this is where UCS SACCO excels as its services are unique and tailored to satisfy customer needs. For instance, I was able to easily access a loan of millions when I was buying paint during the construction of my B&B. More pleasing was the swift pace with which my loan was processed,” added Dr. Kafulatira. Dr. Kafulatira said her soon to be launched B&B is a source of employment thereby contributing to the realization of the country’s blue print, Malawi 2063.
