Ezelina Chimaliro, a civil servant working with the judiciary office in Lilongwe, is one woman who has graduated from a habit of impulse spending to a savings culture โ€“ all thanks to United Civil Servants SACCO- UCS SACCO, whose products including savings and member education, have been a redemption among SACCO members. According to Chimaliro, saving money was not one of her financial languages before she joined UCS SACCO as she was always caught off guard in her expenditures, hence, exhausting all her monthly income.โ€œBefore I joined UCS SACCO in 2024, I was very helpless when it came to saving money. At that time, I was of the impression that the fate of all my income was consumption not knowing that I can invest some of my money in savings, thereby laying a strong foundation for a secure and successful future,โ€ said Chimaliro. She has since heaped praise on UCS SACCOโ€™s โ€˜savingsโ€™ product citing that it is fundamental among the many products that UCS SACCO offers. โ€œWhen you belong to an institution that offers excellent financial products like savings, chances are that you will improve in terms of financial management and that includes spending habits. Now that I save money with UCS SACCO, I am better prepared for emergencies and unexpected expenses later in life. And by learning the difference between needs and wants, I now understand better that money is limited and must be used wisely,โ€ added Chimaliro. Meanwhile, Chimaliro is still basking in the excitement of the dividends she received from UCS SACCO in 2024 and has her eyes set on her impending dividends for 2025. Just to mention, UCS SACCO empowers members to manage wealth and secure their future, and it shows members their responsibility in making the Sacco strong.

COPING WITH RETIREMENT THROUGH SAVINGS FROM UCS SACCO

In Malawi and the rest of the world, it is common for employees nearing their retirement age to develop a retirement fever especially when they havenโ€™t figured out on how best to finance their basic needs in the absence of a salary. James Nkolongo, a former messenger at Salima District Fisheries office, ensured the future of his life after retirement was in his own hands by joining United Civil Servants SACCO-UCS SACCO in 2021. Nkolongo, who served at Salima District Fisheries for nearly 4 decades and is a UCS SACCO member from Salima branch, said he did not find it hard to cope with life after retirement considering he had the confidence that his savings at UCS SACCO were bound to keep working for him. โ€œWhen I joined the UCS SACCO, I was exposed to a culture of savings. Of course, I joined as a civil servant but I was aware that I will join the Nzika Account Savings once I retire. Among other benefits, the Nzika Account Savings keeps retirement benefits safe and growing, gives retirees access to financial support through affordable loans, encourages retirees to remain financially secure, helps retirees to manage retirement funds through structured saving, and reduces the risk of quickly exhausting retirement benefits,โ€œ said Nkolongo. Nkolongo, highlighted that many people stop saving after retirement, yet financial needs continue. For instance, if not for my savings at UCS SACCO and the loans which I access at the institution, I would have struggled to meet the financial demands of my family.Nkolongo said: โ€œToday, even as a retiree, I am able to still pay school fees for my kids because I have access to flexible loans offered by UCS SACCO and I receive dividends from my savings at the end of each financial year. Nothing has changed compared to the time I had a job because I am still thriving financially. Remarkably, through UCS SACCO, I was able to secure a loan to invest in my agriculture.โ€Today, Nkolongo is an established farmer who grows maize on a 2 acres farm in Maganga Village in the area of traditional authority Mdalamkwanda, Salima. For context, Nzika Savings account is for all retirees and it provides a safe place for pension deposits, offering flexible access to savings for daily expenses or emergencies.

BREAKING FEES BARRIERS THROUGH UCS SACCO'S LOANS

In her quest to further her studies whilst working as a teacher in Malawiโ€™s civil service, Gift Likoya discovered that belonging to a SACCO is the foundation of sustainable wealth creation. Gift joined United Civil Servants SACCO-UCS SACCO in 2022, and her academic dream turned into a profound testimony. Likoya: I am everlastingly grateful for UCS SACCO's financial productsAccording to Likoya, she could not have managed to finance her studies in Early Childhood Development had she not joined UCS SACCO . โ€œI am thrilled with UCS SACCOโ€™s products and incredible service delivery. I was able to complete my studies in Early Childhood Development because of the loans I was accessing at UCS SACCO. Their loans have a lower interest rate and the repayment period is flexible,โ€ said Likoya. Likoya also applauded UCS SACCO for its efforts towards member education saying it is the principal catalyst for financial stability and wealth creation at wholesale. โ€œThrough the United Civil Servants SACCO, I have learned that financial discipline is not a box you check off; it is a behaviour you nurture once you are taught. And when it grows, it becomes the very thing that breathes life into financial stability. It is the secret ingredient that turns plans into progress," said Likoya. Meanwhile, Likoya is pursuing her studies in nursing and she casts her vote of gratitude to UCS SACCO for granting her another education loan.
